Ishtiaq Ahmed is a British, UK, Australian and European trained surgeon who performs all aspects of adult cardiac surgery, with a specialist interest in mitral valve repair and minimal access techniques. He currently works as a consultant cardiac surgeon at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and The Montefiore Hospital in Brighton. He has a repair rate of over 90% for degenerative mitral valve lesions which include complex bileaflet prolapse, Barlow's valves and infective endocarditis.

He has been awarded multiple fellowship awards by the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons (UK) and the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. This enabled him to train with world class surgeons in Brussels and Lyon (Dr Hugo Vanerman and Professor Obadia) to facilitate his expertise in mitral valve surgery. He has been invited to speak about the benefits of mitral surgery and minimal access techniques on a national level. He was recently invited to Mount Sinai in New York to further his mitral expertise.

Personal Profile

Ishtiaq Ahmed lives and works in Brighton. He has a young family and after spending much of his life in the Northeast, is enjoying exploring the south coast. His main hobbies outside of work are swimming and cycling. He worked as a doctor at the 2011 World Indoor Track Cycling Championships and has spent much time in the French Alps.
