Professional Profile

I am a Consultant Physician and specialist in gastroenterology and endoscopy. Until recently I was Clinical Director of the Sussex Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

I trained at King's College Hospital, London, and then undertook higher medical training in Cambridge, The Middlesex and University College Hospitals in London.

I was appointed Consultant Gastroenterologist to Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and until recently was the Endoscopy Training Lead in Brighton. I have specialist endoscopic skills in diagnosis and treatment of most gastroenterological diseases. 

In 2007 I was awarded the Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship to the Medical University of South Carolina, USA investigating new endoscopic treatments. In 2008 I received the Silver Award for Clinical Excellence from the Department of Health.

I am one of only four accredited Bowel Cancer Screening Colonoscopists (UK's highest standard for colonoscopy) in Brighton. 

I am the lead author of  the UK guidance on bowel cancer screening for high risk groups including individuals with a family history of bowel cancer, polyps and colitis published in 2010.

Personal Profile

Dr Cairns is married with three children (now grown up) and lives just outside of Brighton.

He enjoys tennis, travel, music and walking along the South Downs.
