Professional Profile
Following radiology training in Brighton and Sussex Dr Sayer completed a two and a half year fellowship in thoracic and body imaging at St Georges and the Royal Brompton Hospitals in London before being appointed as a consultant body radiologist with a specialist interest in thoracic and head & neck imaging.
Dr Sayer specialises in ultrasound and cross-sectional imaging of the neck, thyroid gland, thorax and body. He has completed hundreds of image guided biopsies for successful tissue diagnosis of benign and malignant conditions with annually audit outcomes exceeding national standards. He is a core member of regional multidisciplinary teams for: H&N cancer, thyroid cancer, lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, infectious disease, HIV medicine and parathyroid disease. He has recently been invited as an expert reader for a large UK based lung cancer screening trial at University College London.
Dr Sayer has a wide academic interest and has received three prestigious magna cum laude awards from the Radiological Society of North America for papers on thoracic oncological imaging. He has written review articles and authored book chapters in the field of lung nodules, lung cancer and pulmonary embolism. Dr Sayer is a member of a number of international imaging societies and is an invited lecturer for the British Thoracic Oncology Group, The Royal Society of Medicine and The Royal College of Radiologists. He teaches on both undergraduate and masters courses in medicine and oncological imaging.
Professional Interests
Local Service Development: Development of new imaging protocols and pathways for private and NHS patients.
Research: Publication of peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on pulmonary hypertension, lung cancer, lung nodules, thyroid nodules and cutting edge imaging techniques such as dual-energy CT.
Teaching: Undergraduate students, St Georges and Brighton Medical Schools, Postgraduate students and Specialist Registrars, KSS Deanery.
Personal Interests
Outside of medicine Dr Sayer enjoys spending time with his two young children, live music, yoga and cycling.
