Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure where implants are inserted beneath the natural tissue to make the breasts appear larger, firmer and fuller. The Montefiore Hospital has a team of cosmetic surgeons who specialise in breast augmentation, so be assured that your surgery will be performed by an experienced consultant.
Breast enlargement is currently the most popular cosmetic procedure for women in the UK* due to the numerous psychological benefits associated with the surgery. This may include increased confidence in appearance and increased feelings of femininity.
We want you to feel in control of your breast surgery, so from your initial consultation the specialist you choose to see will advise you of the various options so that you can make the decision that is right for you. The consultant will also explain the outcome you can expect following surgery plus the risks and alternatives to breast augmentation.
During the initial consultation, you will discuss what you hope to achieve from surgery including the size and shape plus the type of implant you would prefer. We offer two options for breast enlargement at The Montefiore Hospital. You may choose between silicone implants which have a firm feel and are considered to be the most realistic to the touch, or saline implants which are deflated for insertion so the incision is smaller and less conspicuous. Both implants have advantages and disadvantages but The Montefiore Hospital will only ever use the highest quality products.
On average, following a breast enlargement, most patients will stay in hospital for one or two days. The surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic which means you are asleep for the entire procedure, generally lasting one to two hours.
During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss the various techniques to insert the implant. You can choose between having an incision near the armpit, under the breasts, down the side of the breast or around the areola. The implant is then placed beneath your natural breast tissue or under the muscle of the breast and when in the correct position, stitches are used to close the incision.
Following surgery, you will be required to wear a special supportive bra to aid the recovery process and help you feel more comfortable. You will also require some time off work to recover at home. You will be informed of the associated risks to recovering at home by your consultant.
