This procedure can have many beneficial outcomes including relief of discomfort in common areas such as the neck and back and helping to improve bad posture. Psychologically, a breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, may also help women to feel more confident in their appearance and less self-conscious about the way they look.
The breast reduction process requires removal of some of your breast tissue. There are a number of ways to achieve this but generally, incisions are made to the lower part of the breasts and tissue is removed. The skin is then re-shaped and nipples are moved to suit this new shape. Finally the cuts are closed with stitches.
This operation is performed under general anaesthetic, so you will be asleep and the operation usually takes a minimum of two hours . Following surgery, you will stay in hospital for at least one night and you will also need to plan time off work to recover at home. During this recovery phase, it is important to wear a special supportive bra.
Whilst your breasts will not grow back, they may increase in size if you put weight on or become pregnant.
