Rhytidectomy, more commonly known as a facelift is a surgical procedure which lifts the facial skin and underlying muscles, designed to give your face a tighter, smoother, more youthful appearance.
There are several different options available for a face lift at The Montefiore Hospital in Brighton and Hove. These include the mini facelift, full facelift, lower facelift and brow lift. With a full facelift operation, an incision is made around your hairline, past the front of your ear and occasionally under your chin to enable the removal of excess skin and fat plus the tightening of the muscles.
A facelift (rhytidectomy) is performed under general anaesthetic and you'll usually need to stay overnight for one to two days following surgery. It is normal to feel swelling and bruising around your face and tightness when you open your mouth so it is vital to book a minimum of two weeks off work to recover. The full result of a facelift will generally not be seen for six to nine months as the swelling takes time to subside. You will be informed of the associated risks to recovering at home by your consultant.
