Professional Profile

Dr Thomas Alway is a consultant cardiologist with 15 years of experience. Dr Alway combines specialist expertise in inherited cardiac conditions, heart failure and advanced cardiac rhythm management, enabling him to provide comprehensive care throughout every stage of a patient's journey. His practice is centred on providing seamless continuity of care as patients' needs evolve over time, from establishing a diagnosis and assessing inherited risk within families to long-term management and advanced therapies, including device implantation where required. He provides genetic testing for individuals and families affected by inherited cardiac conditions.  Also offers comprehensive general cardiology assessments for patients with symptoms including chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations and blackouts.

Dr Alway specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of inherited cardiac conditions, including cardiomyopathies and inherited arrhythmias, working closely with patients and their families to develop personalised treatment plans. Also provides diagnostic genetic testing, as well as comprehensive family screening for relatives at risk of inherited heart disease. Dr Alway has expertise in diagnosing and managing all forms of heart failure, from newly diagnosed disease to advanced heart failure requiring complex therapies. As patients' conditions evolve, Dr Alway provides the full spectrum of advanced cardiac device therapies, including pacemakers, ICDs, CRT devices, S-ICDs and contemporary conduction system pacing techniques. His expertise in inherited cardiac conditions and heart failure allows him to identify patients most likely to benefit from device therapy and provide seamless care before, during and after implantation.

Dr Thomas Alway is the Lead for Inherited Cardiac Conditions (ICC) at University Hospitals Sussex, where he has set up and developed a local specialist ICC service for patients in Sussex. He is also Co-Chair of the Cardiomyopathy UK Sussex Support Group, working closely with patients and families affected by cardiomyopathy to improve support, understanding and access to specialist care. Dr Alway is passionate about education and am the educational lead for cardiology at the Royal Sussex County hospital, holding the position of College Tutor for Cardiology.

Personal Profile

Outside of work, Dr Alway enjoys spending time with my wife and my two young sons, as well as with friends. He also loves playing tennis, padel and golf.
