Professional Profile

 Mr Max Cunnane is a Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon with a specialist interest in Head and Neck Surgery. He treats a wide range of ENT conditions, from common ear, nose and throat problems to complex disorders affecting the thyroid, parathyroid and salivary glands, as well as head and neck cancer.

Mr Cunnane understands that symptoms affecting the head and neck can have a significant impact on everyday life and can often be a source of stress and uncertainty. He is committed to providing clear explanations, compassionate care and personalised treatment plans, ensuring that every patient understands their condition and the treatment options available to them. Both surgical and non-surgical treatments are offered wherever appropriate, with care tailored to each individual's needs and circumstances.

Mr Cunnane studied Medicine at the University of Nottingham, where he completed both a Bachelor of Medical Sciences and a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (BMBS). Following qualification as a doctor, he undertook higher surgical training in Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery within the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery.

During his specialist training, he gained experience at several leading hospitals, including the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Hospital, and Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. This extensive training provided broad experience in managing both routine and complex ENT conditions, particularly within head and neck surgery.

He subsequently achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (FRCS ORL-HNS) and completed a Master of Surgery (MCh) in Otolaryngology, having been awarded a full scholarship for the programme.

Mr Cunnane specialises in the assessment and treatment of adult ENT conditions, including: Thyroid nodules and goitre, parathyroid disease and hyperparathyroidism, salivary gland disorders and lumps, head and neck cancer, voice disorders and hoarseness, swallowing difficulties, airway problems, neck lumps.

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Cunnane is committed to medical education and training. He is the Undergraduate Teaching Lead for Brighton and Sussex Medical School and is actively involved in teaching medical students, junior doctors and surgical trainees.

He has published extensively in peer-reviewed medical journals and has presented research at national and international meetings. His academic interests include head and neck cancer, voice and laryngeal disorders, airway surgery, and quality improvement within ENT practice.

Mr Cunnane is a core member of both the Head and Neck Cancer Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) and the Thyroid Multidisciplinary Team (MDT). Working alongside oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, specialist nurses and therapists, he helps ensure patients receive accurate diagnoses, personalised treatment plans and care based on the latest evidence and national guidelines.
