Dr Stuart Cairns is a Consultant Physician and specialist in gastroenterology and endoscopy. He is also Clinical Director of the Sussex Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
He trained at King's College Hospital, London, and then undertook higher medical training in Cambridge, The Middlesex and University College Hospitals in London.
He was appointed Consultant Gastroenterologist to Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and is the Endoscopy Training Lead in Brighton. He has specialist skills for endoscopic treatment of jaundice and pancreatic and bowel disease.
In 2007 Dr Cairns was awarded the Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship to the Medical University of South Carolina, USA investigating new endoscopic treatments. In 2008 he received the Silver Award for Clinical Excellence from the Department of Health.
He is one of only three accredited Bowel Cancer Screening Colonoscopists (UK's highest standard for colonoscopy) in Brighton. In 2008 he was appointed Clinical Director of the Sussex Bowel Cancer Screening Programme responsible for implementation and managing the screening programme across Sussex.
Dr Cairns is the lead author for the current UK guidance on bowel cancer screening for high risk groups including individuals with a family history of bowel cancer, polyps and colitis.
Dr Cairns is married with three children (now grown up) and lives just outside of Brighton.
He enjoys tennis, travel, music and walking along the South Downs.
